Europa from Brazil

Hi Nanna,

On November 29 we held a retirement ceremony for Europa. She will now be retired at our small farm where she will enjoy a stress-free life!

For the past 23 years she has won more state and national titles than we can remeber and is, until today, the horse who has won most titles in Brazil! I couldn't help but wear my treasured ring as another way of honoring her today and forever....

So here is a photograph for you - thank you for being a part of our story!

Adriana

We would like to thank Adriana for choosing nannasalmi ring and wish
many happy years for Europa!

Gingerbread, Horses and Birch Branches

There are certain smells that belong to Christmas like cinnamon, cloves and ginger. In the old
days the exotic spices were status symbols and only the rich people could afford them.
Some spices were as expensive as gold and they were brought from the distant countries.
Christmas time was time when people wanted to put best on the table
and in gingerbread these valuable ingredients were used generously.

Baking gingerbread is a lot of fun and with the shapes your imagination is the only limitation.
Children love making them - just take care that they don´t eat
all the dough before the cookies are baked...

We baked horses, dogs and hearts, of course!

We have some puppies in the house for the Christmas Eve and this year we
have "Christmas Birch" instead of  the actual Christmas tree.

RECIPE:

(makes about 200)
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Cooking time: 5-7 minutes per batch
Oven temperature: 200 °C (400°F)

1 1/4 cups (300 g) butter
1 1/4 cups (300 g) sugar
3 eggs
1 cup (2 1/2 dl) dark syrup
2 ts ground cloves
2 ts ground cinnamon
2 ts ground ginger
1 tablespoon grated orange rind
about 7 cups (1 kg) white flour
3 ts baking soda

1. Boil the syrup and spices, add the butter and beat until the mixture is cool.
2. Beat the sugar and eggs.
3. Mix the soda in with part of the flour and then combine with the syrup-margarine mixture.
4. Add the whipped eggs and the rest of the flour. (Do not knead the final mixture)
5. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and leave overnight in a cool place.
6. Roll out the dough, cut up into shapes and bake the cookies in the oven until golden brown,
5-7 mins.

Only one week...

Waiting for Christmas

If you are in Finland before Christmas you must visit one of the most beutiful
- and eldest - Finnish towns, Porvoo. Or what do you think?

Photo www.VisitPorvoo.fi
Porvoo is a city and a municipality situated on the southern coast of Finland approximately 50 kilometres (30 mi) east of Helsinki. Porvoo is one of the six medieval towns in Finland, first mentioned as a city in texts from 14th century. The town received its name from a Swedish earth fortress near the river Porvoonjoki which flows through the town. The name Porvoo is the Fennicised version of the Swedish name (Borgå) and its parts of borg meaning "castle" and å "river".
-wikipedia-

Every year before Christmas we go to Porvoo and visit the old part of the town. Without
this visit it does not feel like Christmas. It does not even matter wether there is snow or not -
the shop keepers, restaurant and coffee shop keepers take care of the atmosphere.

There is very little traffic on the streets.

Olive trees don´t actually survive the Finnish winter...

Riimikko toy shop sells old fashioned toys, mechanical toys, dollhouse miniatures etc.
and  have a Moomin house at the window!

This part of the city is like a living museum. The best thing is that people also live there.

Small shops full of arts and crafts, souvenirs, antiques, fashion, design...

...good food in great restaurants, delicious pastry in ambient cafés, small museums...

...plenty of Finnish history, beautiful, narrow alleys, old architecture,
idyllic back yards and the Porvoo Cathedral up on the hill.

Porvoo is worth visiting every time of the year. If you have only one
day, it is enough for this compact, little town. If you have to, it´s even better.

FAQ: Why are the Originals more expensive than the Copies?

In one sentence:
It does not make any sense to sell copies that cost the same, or more, than the original ones.

When somebody creates something new, good, meaningful and special it is only
a matter of time when somebody comes, copies the idea and product and starts to sell it.
A designer handbag copies are a good example of the whole industry based on
taking advantage on somebody else´s work.

How is it possible to sell similar kind of products so much cheaper?
There are many things that make it possible:

To create something new, special and unique you need creativity, new kind of thinking, initiativity, courage and belief on your product or idea. The creator has usually worked for a long time with something similar that has sustained the new ideas.  Read More here: What does it take to create something special?

Copycats don´t need these qualities or experience: using somebody else´s idea does not take creativity - it takes something else, you name it...

An idea is not a ready product yet. It takes time and effort to refine it, it might be a process of years. Many things have to be considered and thought about, problems solved, techniques tried. Other people´s skills and know-how might also be needed. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right cooperators and  they get paid for their work and knowledge. Usually making prototypes is necessary. That is rather expensive because the prototypes are often made by hand or with techniques that are far more expensive than the final producing process.

Copycats don´t have to worry or spend their money and time on these kind of things. That work and investment is already done by somebody else. Their "prototype" is a ready product made by somebody else.

After having a final product there is marketing to do. Nobody knows the product yet, it´s something new. Branding takes time - and yes - money. A brand is a combination of name (trademark), conspicuousness and reputation. A brand is not created over night, it´s not created only with money, and a reputation is something that only customers can give to you.

Copycats have a ready market and demand. A copycat often chooses a brand name similar to the original one and gets the benefits of a good reputation for free, without own achievements or effort. The saddest part of this is, that a copycat can ruin the reputation of the original ones.

Also to consider:
-Copies are often made by cheaper labor.
-Materials are usually not equal comparing to original ones. Have you ever seen a copy with better quality than the original one?
-Many of these copying companies are rather young and short-lived.
-You don´t get to see faces behind products. Sometimes it is even impossible to contact the company especially when it comes to a reclamation.

When you buy a product - a handbag, sunglasses, a scarf, furniture - what ever -
you always have a chance to think about the ethics of your choice.

FAQ: Why the nannasalmi jewelries are more expensive than other woven horsehair jewelries?

You can be unique with your dress
What would be a better excuse for these DeNiro -boots than winter wedding?
You’re able to think about long-sleeve gowns, deeper shades, heavier fabrics and
glamorous  accessories. And you, the groom or the guests don´t have to worry about sweating.

It´s easier to decorate spectacularly
All you need is lights and candles. They will be absolutely beautiful and glorious
in the dark winter night and you don´t need so many flowers to compete
with the nature´s green.

Snow is a beautiful background
You will get very unique wedding photos - no matter if it´s snowing or shining
